The Center at Sachem Rock
East Bridgewater Senior Center
East Bridgewater, MA
Turowski2 Architecture was commissioned when the long standing Senior Center Building Committee was granted the use of a Town owned National Register historic farm site Sachem Rock Farm. The 30 acre farm was purchased by the Town in the late 1990s and since time was largely used for passive recreation. Two buildings on the site, a 1927 house and a mid-19th century barn, remained unoccupied since the time of the Towns purchase.
Turowski2 was given the charge to explore three options for construction on the site, including the utilizing of the two structures in the development of the new center, utilizing just the house, and designing a completely new structure on a separate corner of the site. After several historic public presentations of the schematic design options, the committee gave direction to pursue the option of working with the house and the barn. The new building scheme restored and renovated the house for the business uses related to the senior center and replicated
the barn with a new structure which is linked with a low one story structure. The barn and link serve more active programs of the center and offer a broader community use with the large function room and commercial kitchen. The design gives prominence to the historic structures on the site.
