New 88,000 square foot elementary school for 600
students in grades Pre-K through 6. This new school,
situated between the established turn of the 20th
century residential neighborhood and the prestigious
Williams College campus in the center of
Williamstown was designed to bridge the space
between. Prominent on the street with its formal
brick façade like so many of the college’s
buildings, the low slung roof afforded the
opportunity for dormers which were scaled to relate
to the neighboring residences. In this school, grade
specific classroom pods are organized along a
central spine of public function spaces. These pods
create south facing courtyards which offer protected
play areas, sheltered from the prevailing winter
winds.
